Women in Medicine Spotlight – Dr. Danielle Hassel

September is Women in Medicine Month, and we’re spotlighting some of the leading ladies in Memphis healthcare.

Our first spotlight is our very own 2020 Board President, Dr. Danielle Hassel.

Danielle H. Hassel, MD

Danielle H. Hassel, MD, FAAPMR is the Associate Medical Director at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of North Memphis. She currently serves as President of the Memphis Medical Society, Immediate Past President of the Tennessee Association of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, International Associate of the American College of Healthcare Executives, and is a Diamond Life Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

What drives your passion for practicing medicine?

“My area of specialty keeps me passionate. I have the opportunity to care for patients after sustaining life-changing disabilities, such as traumatic brain injury, stroke, and spinal cord injury. As an inpatient rehab specialist, I have the privilege of providing medical treatment while leading the team of rehab professionals who can facilitate the recovery process.  The reward is knowing we’ve made long-lasting impacts in the lives of patients and families as they very often adjust to challenging new norms and potentially compromised quality of life.”

What advice would you give to female physicians or students who are just beginning their careers?

“Don’t let anyone or anything intimidate you. Stand strong in your beliefs. Be confident in your talents and skills.”

What would you like to share for our Women in Medicine Spotlights?

“As the fight for gender equality continues, I believe it’s important to acknowledge there are certain traits in many women that make us extraordinary. It’s okay to recognize and utilize those differences to excel in the art of medicine and ultimately provide the highest standard of care for patients.”
