Physicians and the entire healthcare community are inundated with “Who’s Who”, “Best Doctor”, and many other arbitrary rankings of physicians. Many of these entities do not have physician representation, or are often for-profit ventures disguised as credible community-based programs.
Our Society’s Board has made the decision to move forward with the inaugural Memphis Medical Society Hall of Fame. We believe that the physicians should have a say in who the best are in our medical community. The inaugural “Hall” will be enshrined at our 150th Anniversary Gala on April 25 at the Memphis Botanic Garden.
We are still working out nomination process details. The selection committee will be a private group of MMS members, and we will limit elections to 3-5 individuals. We hope to make this an annual tradition that allows us to honor our colleagues and share their accomplishments with the entire community.
Why this? And why now? Through lived experience and surveys, our organization has learned that we need to be more community-facing than our natural tendencies have historically been. While we are motivated intrinsically through advocacy for the profession and our mutual “calling”, we have identified a need to better tell the story of our members and their accomplishments.
There will be more to come about “The Hall” and more to come about how we intend to celebrate you, our members, in the 150th year and beyond.
I look forward to continuing to serve you as President in year 149 and revealing the great plans we have in store.
