Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics is returning as the Medical Provider for the 2022 Memphis Ironman and we need your help!
The race this year currently has around 2,000 athletes signed up so far and they will allow up to 3,000 to sign up all the way up to race week. If you have ever volunteered at the St. Jude Marathon Medical Tent the set-up is pretty much identical.
The participants will all swim, bike, and run a total of 70.3 miles at Shelby Farms on Saturday, October 1st.
Dr. Wesley Owen is our Medical Director for this years’ race. He is one of our Sports Medicine providers here at Campbell Clinic. Feel free to email him with any questions as well wowen@campbellclinic.com .
We will have a large medical tent set up in Shelby Farms where we will treat athletes who become ill or injured during the race. Common issues include both orthopedic conditions (sprain, strains, broken bones, etc.) and general medical issues (dehydration, muscle cramps, low sodium levels, seizure, etc.).
Expected number of injured/sick athletes varies by race based on environmental conditions; however, a safe estimate is 250-400 that will need to be triaged, evaluated, and treated.
Treatments that are administered in the medical tent range from simple oral hydration to administration of intravenous fluids and medications. We will have EMS present to help with emergency situations that require transport to local hospitals.
The medical tent will function as a mini clinic and require registration, transport, triage, formal medical evaluation, IV administration, treatment administration, and clean up/turn over crews.
At this time we are specifically needing RN’s, PA’s, NP’s, MD’s, and DO’s (familiarity of the ER and/or Urgent Care environment is preferred, but not necessary). License must be active!
As you can imagine, this is a huge undertaking and we will need LOTS of volunteers from all departments to help this run smoothly.
