Carter Towne, MD, is a Memphis gastroenterologist whose career spans more than four decades of clinical practice, medical education, and physician leadership. Since beginning practice in 1983, Dr. Towne has cared for thousands of patients across the Mid-South while also training generations of medical students, residents, and fellows through the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) College of Medicine, where he serves as a clinical assistant professor of medicine.
Dr. Towne earned his undergraduate degree from Memphis State University and his medical degree from UTHSC in 1977. He completed his internship, residency, and fellowship in gastroenterology at UTHSC, remaining closely connected to academic medicine throughout his career. He is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology.
Beyond patient care and teaching, Dr. Towne played a significant role in shaping the business and administrative landscape of medicine in Memphis. He was involved in the founding of MetroCare Physicians, an independent practice association, and the HealthChoice Network, efforts that are designed to help physicians navigate the business complexities of medical practice. Through this work, he contributed to strengthening payer relationships in the region, including helping establish Memphis as one of the largest Cigna markets in the country.
Dr. Towne has served as chairman of the board of MetroCare Physicians and a member of the board of governors for Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare and HealthChoice. His career reflects a commitment to excellent patient care and sustaining the systems that allow physicians and practices to thrive.
