MMS Hall of Fame 2026: Hugh Francis, III, M.D.

Hugh Francis III, MD, FACS, is a vascular and general surgeon with more than three decades of service to the Memphis medical community. A graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Dr. Francis completed his general surgery residency at UT Southwestern/Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas and a vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis, Tennessee. He has been a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons since 1993.

Dr. Francis has practiced with Memphis Surgery Associates since 1992. He holds medical licensure in Tennessee and Mississippi and maintains active affiliations with Saint Francis Hospitals, Methodist Germantown Hospital, Baptist Memorial Hospitals, and Methodist Germantown Surgery Center.

Throughout his career, he has served in numerous leadership roles, including President of Memphis Medical Society (2001), President of Medical Staff at Saint Francis Hospital (2013-2014), Governing Board Chair of Saint Francis Hospital (2015-2020), and Board Chair of State Volunteer Mutual Insurance Company (2015-2024), where he has also served as a director since 1997. In 2024, he received the Tennessee Medical Association’s Outstanding Physician Award.

Dr. Francis is a member of multiple specialty organizations, including the Society for Vascular Surgery, the Southern Association for Vascular Surgery, Parkland Surgical Society, Harwell Wilson Surgical Society, MMS, TMA, and AMA. His work reflects a longstanding commitment to advancing surgical practice, medical professionalism, and patient care across the Mid-South.
