Memphis Medical Society Announces Inaugural Hall of Fame Honorees in Celebration of our 150th Anniversary

he Memphis Medical Society (MMS) has announced the inaugural class of its Physician Hall of Fame, a new recognition program launched as part of the organization’s 150th anniversary celebration. The MMS Hall of Fame honors physicians whose contributions have shaped the practice of medicine and improved the health of Memphis and our neighbors throughout the Mid-South.

The inaugural honorees represent a cross-section of specialties, institutions, and decades of service. Selected through a peer-driven process, these physicians have demonstrated excellence in patient care, leadership, innovation, and community impact.

The 2026 MMS Hall of Fame inductees are: Reed C. Baskin, MD; James C. Fleming, MD, FACS; Hugh Francis III, MD, FACS; Kevin T. Foley, MD; G. Scott Morris, MD, MDiv; Claudette Shephard, MD; Owen Britt Tabor Sr., MD; Kurt W. Tauer, MD, FAC; Indurani Tejwani, MD; and Carter Towne, MD.

“For 150 years, the Memphis Medical Society has represented the collective voice of physicians across our community,” said Memphis Medical Society CEO Clint Cummins. “The creation of the MMS Hall of Fame allows us to formally recognize those individuals whose work has advanced medicine and strengthened the fabric of healthcare in Memphis.”

Founded in 1876, MMS has played a central role in advancing medical practice, advocacy, and collaboration across the region. The 150th anniversary marks a milestone moment for the organization to reflect on its history while looking ahead to the future of healthcare in Memphis and beyond.

“The stories of these honorees are the story of Memphis medicine,” said Memphis Medical Society President Dr. Catherine Womack. “Their impact extends far beyond their individual practices, as they have helped build systems of care, mentor generations of physicians, and improve access for patients across our region. This inaugural class reflects the very best of our Society’s legacy.”

The MMS Hall of Fame is an ongoing annual initiative, recognizing physicians whose work exemplifies the Society’s mission and values. By establishing the Hall, MMS aims to preserve the history of organized medicine in Memphis and the Mid-South while inspiring continued excellence in the years ahead.

The inaugural class of honorees will be formally recognized at the Society’s Physicians’ Gala on April 25, 2026. The event will bring together physicians, healthcare leaders, and community partners to celebrate a milestone 150-year legacy. For more information visit mdmemphis.org
