What is Hematology?

Hematology—or the study of blood, blood diseases, and blood disorders—is the branch of medicine primarily concerned with the pathology, prognosis, etiology, and prevention of blood-related diseases. Read More…

What Conditions Do Hematologists Treat?

Hematologists treat immune, clothing, and vascular issues such as arterial thromboembolisms, deep-vein thrombosis, and hematologic malignancies like leukemia and lymphoma.

What Kinds of Tests Do Hematologists Conduct?

Hematologists conduct several different types of tests to help diagnose blood diseases and disorders. They can perform white blood cell tests to check for a wide variety of conditions.

The most common conditions these tests check for are infections or anemia. Another common test hematologists conduct is for blood cells, or RBC tests. An increase in red blood cell production can signal that a person is dealing with stress, dehydration, or in some cases, issues with bone marrow.

They can also conduct hemoglobin tests, which detect an increase or decrease in hemoglobin. These fluctuating levels can lead to several medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Hematocrit, or HCT, is responsible for the plasma to red blood cell ratio. Hematocrit tests are usually given when conditions such as anemia or hydration issues are suspected.

What Treatments Do Hematologists Offer?

Hematologists have a large range of treatments to choose from, depending on the cause. A few examples of treatments include iron tablets, vitamin B12 injections, and dietary changes. Many blood cancer chemotherapies are given under the care and supervision of hematologists as well. Depending on the severity of the illness, long-term clinical care may be required. Other treatments may consist of therapeutic blood-letting for rarer cases of polycythemia or too much iron in the blood.
