L. Keith Atkins, PHD, ABPP-CN
Dr. Atkins was born in Arkadelphia, Arkansas and grew up working on the family farm. He completed his undergraduate degree in psychology at Henderson State University and his master’s degree in Educational Psychology from East Texas State University. He was awarded his PhD in Counseling Psychology from The University of North Texas in 1984 after completing his internship at The University of Tennessee-Memphis Clinical Psychology Internship Consortium.
Dr. Atkins founded the Neuropsychology Department at Semmes-Murphey in 1989. He has provided training, supervision, and mentoring for interns and post-doctoral fellows from the Memphis Veterans Administration Hospital and The University of Tennessee for 27 years. Dr. Atkins opened practicum training opportunities to University of Memphis graduate students in 2010. His practice is limited to adults with a wide range of neurologic conditions including traumatic brain injury, dementia, and psychiatric conditions presenting as neurologic complaints.
Specialty areas of expertise include aviation neuropsychology, medical practitioner and executive fitness-for-duty, and testamentary capacity examinations. Dr. Atkins is 1 of 10 neuropsychologists in the United States appointed a “Special Medical Consultant to the FAA Federal Air Surgeon as a Specialist in Neuropsychology.” Dr. Atkins also offers forensic neuropsychology services and has provided expert testimony associated with traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder for over 25 years.
