Medical Society Releases Book on History of Medicine in Memphis

"Memphis Medicine: A History of Science and Service"

Copies of the book may be purchased for $45 from the Medical Society by calling 901-761-0200

After three years of research and writing, the Medical Society is pleased to announce the release of our new book, Memphis Medicine: A History of Science and Service.  This 344 page book contains dozens of historical photos pertaining to and related to the practice of medicine in Memphis.  Co-authored by two local Memphis writers, Patricia LaPointe McFarland and Mary Ellen Pitts, Ph.D., the book chronicles healthcare in our city from the unhealthful conditions faced by the early settlers of Memphis to the emergence of the bio-tech industry.

The reader will be told of numerous historical events, from the colorful steamboat ear tot he Civil War, when Memphis received its first national recognition for its medical care.  It explores the devastation of the 1878 yellow fever epidemic that resulted in the loss of the city's charter, and of the city's subsequent recovery.  The book tells the stories of the development of Tennessee's largest medical education complex, of the great achievements in private medical practice, particularly in orthopedics at the Campbell Clinic and in neurosurgery at Semmes-Murphey, of Memphis doctors' contributions in World War I and World War II, of the big three hospitals - Baptist Memorial, Methodist and Saint Francis and their growth into regional systems - accounts of the death of Elvis, and of the tragedy of Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as many more historical facts and profiles.
